Calming waves is the concept behind a new furniture collection designed by family-run, Asian American-owned design studio Sun at Six. The Wave collection includes the Wave Chair, along with a pair of limited release one-of-one pieces, the Wave Shelf and the Diamond Wave Table. It began with the Wave Shelf, made from hand-selected planks of architectural grade American black walnut. The wave pattern was tightened up a bit in the design of the six-legged Diamond Wave Table and applied to the tabletop’s edge, the table’s diamond shape balancing the softness. Made from solid FSC-certified white ash, the design studio continues to push the sustainable aspect of the industry forward. In fact, all of the wood they use is sustainably source. The last piece, and perhaps the most playful, is the Wave Chair, which also uses FSC-certified white ash with a loose wave pattern applied to the legs.
Sun at Six has a focus on traditional Chinese joinery, using interwoven joints rather than nails and screws to hold the elements together. This allows for the furniture to react to changes in temperature and humidity by expanding and contracting rather than cracking and warping. Their woods are air-dried, hand-sealed, and kiln-dried according to lessons learned over the years. The furniture is then finished by hand-applying their own tenna oil, a natural nut oil-based finish.
