this bamboo headphones concept merges traditional indian craftsmanship and sustainability

sustainable bamboo headphones by Aakansh Chaturvedi

Plastic waste is a major environmental problem and is produced by a wide range of industries, with the electronics industry being no exception. With this in mind, designer Aakansh Chaturvedi from the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay has developed ‘Bambass,’ a sustainable open-back headphone made of bamboo.

Bambass is more sustainable than traditional plastic headphones, as more than 70% of the material used is eco-friendly or recyclable. The design integrates traditional bamboo processing methods and craftsmanship techniques, giving the product an Indian cultural touch while maintaining its modern aesthetic.

abstract bamboo braiding makes each headphone set unique

Aakansh Chaturvedi’s Bambass headphone set pays respect to bamboo workmanship, has the capacity to be mass-produced, and provides electronic items with a new creative direction. The body is mostly comprised of thin coiled bamboo stripes that effectively insulate sound. The resilience and flexibility of stacked bamboo stripes are employed to build the headband, which is reinforced by a stainless steel strip that provides a pleasant grasp overhead. The most complicated component was the adjustable joint for the earcups, which required to be sturdy and lasting. A screw mechanism was used to release the sliding channel to adjust the cups up and down. To extend the life of bamboo, a finish single-layer coating of melamine is applied for general surface protection.

The Indian designer began the Bambass development by learning several ways of bamboo handle making from craftspeople. After exploring different iterations and techniques, Chaturvedi eventually chose a final combination of procedures. Bambass employs coated vegan leather which makes the scope of color variation endless. The pixels of braided bamboo inserted at the open end of the cups generate a range of thousands of distinct abstract shapes, making each headphone set unique.
